Upgrade HP Touchsmart Tablet from  Win 7 Home Premimum to Pro with Technet Pro Key
I have a HP touchsmart laptop(Tm2-1070US) that I just purchased to do some development work. The latop came with Windows 7 Home Premimum 64Bit. I joined Technet and generated a Win 7 Pro Key do that I could upgrade. I don't want to do a full install because of all the specialized drivers/software that makes the tablet work. Mostly I just want the xp compatibility and network features. I tried to do the anytime upgrade and it accepted the key, got to the download and install part and then as it was installing, it said that this version couldn't be upgraded via anytime install. Is there any way to fix this or any other way to do the upgrade without a full install? Any thoughts on how I can do this? Kevin

It may be that you cannot do an anytime upgrade of an OEM installation with a Retail key. This is just a theory and you should call either HP or Microsoft and ask them about it.

Hi, 1. Please check and make sure that you have the right version of Windows Anytime Upgrade key. You can only upgrade a 32-bit version to a 32-bit version or from a 64-bit version to a 64-bit version of Windows 7. 2. As far as I know, an OEM may include a separate Anytime Upgrade DVD along with, or instead of, the typical restore disk. If any of the above are not present, then a Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD can be ordered by request during the upgrade process for a nominal shipping and handling fee. Please contact HP to confirm it. Yep, It's x64 retail key and x64 system. HP is clueless and no help. This should be a no-brainer.

Since this is a retail key, I suggest you contact our Customer Service to confirm whether the key can be used to upgrade via Windows Anytime Upgrade. For your reference, I have enclosed the contact information below: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/295539 Thanks, Novak

Ok, I made my system restore disks for the laptop and then did a full backup. I inserted the Windows Pro CD I downloaded from Technet. I started the upgrade and then got to the point that it was starting the upgrade and then I got the following error message: Windows 7 Home Premium cannot be upgraded to Windows P7 Professional N. Huh????? Kevin

okay, I'm an idiot. I didn't know there was a difference in versions. I was using an "N" key and I shouldn't have been. I've successfully upgraded with the new key. Thanks for the help.
